What would you do if a royal family invited you to a banquet? Would you gladly accept or find an excuse to stay away? Imagine our country, where so many of our brothers and sisters go to bed hungry, while someone rejects a freely offered feast. What a tragedy to refuse what another desperately longs to receive!
This image brings us to Isaiah’s vision of God’s generosity. He prepares a feast for all peoples, destroys death, and wipes away every tear. God invites us into his life, mercy, and eternal joy. Accepting this invitation requires more than words; we must wear the Garment of Grace: a heart humble enough to repent, merciful enough to forgive, and generous enough to love when love becomes costly.
St Francis of Assisi embodied this transformation. Renouncing riches and embracing the poor, he sought to reflect Christ through humility and love. His example challenges us to bring these values into public life. As our country approaches elections, the suffering around us demands honest reflection. When corruption, dishonesty, and indifference persist, it can seem as though we have rejected the very values on which good governance depends. Can we truly wear the Garment of Grace without speaking the truth, acting sincerely, and upholding justice? Nigeria’s hope for greatness depends not only on the leaders we choose, but also on the truth, integrity, and spirit of service we practise.
