According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), what is the order of precedence in the entrance procession?

Answer:

The GIRM (nos. 120–121; 172–173) outlines the typical order of the entrance procession as follows:

  • 1. Thurifer (if incense is used), carrying a thurible with burning incense;
  • 2. Cross-bearer, with the processional cross held high, flanked by two candle bearers;
  • 3. Other Ministers, in proper order:
  • •Acolytes or altar servers;
  • •Lectors (if not proclaiming the readings during that Mass);
  • •Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion (if commissioned and serving that Mass).
  • 4. Deacon, carrying the Book of the Gospels (if used), slightly elevated;
  • 5. Concelebrating priests (if present);
  • 6. The Presider (the priest celebrant or bishop). When a bishop celebrates, additional elements include: MC (Master of Ceremonies) guiding the order; Assistant deacons and chaplains (refer in this context to priests or deacons assigned to assist the bishop during solemn liturgical celebrations; The crozier and mitre bearers.
