The readings of the Sixth Sunday of Easter invite us into the mystery of love that becomes obedience, witness, and mission. In the Gospel of John, Jesus declares: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” He further consoles His disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit, the abiding advocate who will remain with them forever.
In the first reading, the Spirit descends upon the believers in Samaria, while in the second reading, Saint Peter encourages Christians to give witness to their hope with gentleness and reverence. The life of Saint Francis beautifully reflects these readings. Francis did not merely speak about loving Christ; he allowed the love of Christ to transform his entire life.
One famous story tells how Francis embraced and kissed a leper whom he had once feared and avoided. After the encounter, he said that what had once seemed bitter became sweetness to his soul. In that moment, Francis discovered that true love of Christ is shown not only in prayer but also in concrete acts of mercy and compassion. His simplicity, peace, and charity drew many people back to God.
