The Gospel of this Seventh Sunday of Easter places us within the sacred silence of Christ’s priestly prayer. Standing between the Ascension and Pentecost, the Church listens as Jesus entrusts His disciples to the Father: “Holy Father, keep them in your name.” It is a prayer of protection, unity, and belonging, that amid a world marked by hostility and uncertainty, the disciples may remain rooted in the identity they have received from God.
This prayer of Christ finds a living expression in the life of St. Francis of Assisi. After his conversion, Francis often greeted others with the words: “The Lord give you peace.” This was not merely a greeting, but a way of life. He understood that true security is found not in worldly affirmation, but in remaining within the Father’s love revealed in Christ. His life, therefore, became a witness to the peace and unity for which Jesus prayed in today’s Gospel.
As we journey toward Pentecost, this Sunday invites us to enter that same Upper Room spirit: to persevere in prayer, deepen our unity, and allow ourselves to be “kept” by God.
