One of the most moving moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi was when, after encountering Christ, he stood before the Bishop of Assisi, removed his expensive garments, renounced his inheritance, and embraced a life of poverty. To the world, he had lost everything; in reality, he had found everything, for he had discovered the one treasure that never fades—Christ Himself.
His life gives flesh to today’s Gospel, where Jesus speaks of the treasure hidden in a field and the pearl of great price, for which one gladly gives up everything else. The First Reading presents young Solomon, who asked God not for riches, power, or long life, but for a wise and discerning heart. How desperately our nation and our families need such wisdom today, in a world where wealth is often pursued at the expense of truth, justice, and integrity.
Yet no earthly possession can satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart; only Christ can. As Saint Paul reminds us, “all things work together for good for those who love God.” As we celebrate this Eucharist, let us ask ourselves: What is the treasure I am truly living for? May God give us the wisdom of Solomon, the courage of Saint Francis, and hearts that choose Christ above all else, for whoever possesses Christ has already found the greatest treasure of all. Amen.
