One day, St. Francis of Assisi was approached by a starving beggar asking for food. Francis had almost nothing, but he gladly shared the little bread he carried. Those watching thought he had given too much; Francis believed that what is placed in God’s hands is never too little. His generosity sprang not from abundance but from faith.
This story beautifully reflects today’s liturgy. Isaiah invites the hungry to come and eat freely, while Jesus takes five loaves and two fish, blesses them, and feeds a hungry multitude. Nigeria knows the pain of empty tables, soaring prices, insecurity, and uncertain tomorrows. Like the disciples, we often see only what is lacking; Christ sees what faith can accomplish.
He still tells us, “Give them some food yourselves.” He asks us not for abundance but for willing hearts. At this Eucharist, may we place our little in His hands, for the God who blesses, breaks, and gives always multiplies what love surrenders to Him. Amen.
